Chris Farley

Chris Farley was a star whose life ended too soon. At the top of his game, he was known for being a movie star (Tommy Boy, Coneheads, and Black Sheep), an iconic comedian on Saturday Night Live, and an improvisational genius. But he also struggled with various addictions his whole life. Even the star admitted to loving "the pleasures of the flesh," such as food, drugs, and alcohol.

Chris Farley

Farley had many addictions. Here, we will look at three of which that led directly to his untimely end in his 60th floor apartment in the John Hancock Center in downtown Chicago:

Alcoholism

Farley struggled for many years with alcohol addiction. When he was out and about at clubs and bars, or even at private parties, he was known to have a huge appetite for drink. Not only did he drink quite a bit when he was drinking, but he engaged in this type of behavior often. Even up to his dying day, Farley was downing copious amounts of vodka, along with other substances. Ultimately, this addiction led to part of Farley's larger weight issue, as well as a bad overall reputation for partying hard.

Crack Cocaine

Cocaine was found in Farley's system after an autopsy was performed on his body. Several witnesses and fellow partiers had informed the media, after the autopsy, that he had been freebasing crack cocaine is his apartment for days before his death. The female escort who was the last person to see Farley alive also admitted that she had done crack cocaine with him before his death. This addiction led him to the overdose that would end his life at 33.

Food

It is apparent that Farley struggled with demons of obesity for most of his life. Many of his most famous characters are portrayed as overweight slobs who have failed at life, somehow. Believe it or not, Farley felt the same contempt for himself that many of his characters display. He often referred to himself as "the fat boy".

By the end of his life, despite seeking help on several occasions for his eating problem, Farley was at his heaviest weight of his life. He continued to indulge in unhealthy foods, even though he was fully aware that his eating was unhealthy for him. Not only did this harm his health, but also his self-esteem and self-image. Atherosclerosis, or the build-up of fatty tissue along arterial walls of the heart, was cited as one of the contributing factors to Farley's death. This condition comes from years of a sedentary lifestyle, bad diet, and obesity issues. At 5' 8" he was almost 300 lbs.

Death

Chris Farley died on December 18, 1997 at age 33 due to "Intoxication and Overdose of Morphine and Cocaine" resulting in cardiac arrest. Some of the famous people at his funeral included Adam Sandler, Christopher Walken, John Goodman, Dan Aykroyd, Chris Rock, Mike Meyers, Brendan Fraser, and Phil Hartman. His death has often been compared to that of John Belushi.
